Bits 2 Blogs 2013: The Challenge of Engagement

This week, I had the pleasure of speaking at the ‘Bits 2 Blogs‘ event in Newcastle. Hosted at the Great North Museum, and run by the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, it gave those working in the North East cultural heritage sector an opportunity to hear about new ideas and technologies for engaging audiences. It was a great event, with many interesting speakers talking about topics from linked data to ‘flip-flopping’ and 3D printers.

I took the opportunity to talk about why social media may not be the best channel for engagement, the benefits of context and narrative, and methods for allowing your audience to enrich your collections.

The event was live-blogged by Vicky Teinaki, the result of which you can see HERE. She also used Storify to document the Tweets relating to individual talks; mine can be found HERE.

For those who are interested, you can view and download a .pdf of my presentation from the event here: Bits 2 Blogs 19.03.13 – Time:Image – Challenge of Engagement

Please note that most of the pictures in the presentation are hyperlinks to the website in question. Do get in touch if you would like to talk more about anything I mentioned in the presentation.

Thanks to all the organisers and attendees for making such an interesting event. I heartily recommend attending the next ‘Bits 2 Blogs’ if you can.
